As a community, Holy Name Convent often prides itself in honouring the persons who have greatly contributed to the upbringing of the school’s values. Saint Dominic is no different, as he is one of the saints that represents a core aspect of the school’s identity.
As the patron saint of astronomy and the founder of the Dominican Order, he dedicated himself to educating others and sharing the gift of knowledge bestowed upon him through God’s love. The school’s commitment to maintaining a steady balance between education and religion mirrors the principles embodied by Saint Dominic, and resonates deeply with the mission to cultivate both academic excellence and strength in character.
Although Saint Dominic’s feast day is celebrated on August 8th, the Lower Six girls of Saint Dominic’s House took the initiative to honour him on Monday, September 16th. The celebration commenced with an engaging assembly for the school that effectively recounted the life of Saint Dominic and his role as a beacon for the Dominican Order. The assembly featured a lively skit, an informative slideshow, and an interactive trivia segment that tested the school’s knowledge of Saint Dominic. Under the guidance of the captains, Jade Drayton-Edwards and Saleen AJ Allen, the Lower Six girls collaborated to create a memorable tribute to his legacy.
The festivities continued as the Lower Sixers and captains joined forces to organise a lunchtime event in the hall, featuring treats adorned in the house’s royal blue colour. The smiles on the faces of students and faculty alike as they savoured the snacks, watched the house’s impressive dance performance from this year’s Carnival event, and enthusiastically chanted the house’s motto truly enhanced the festive spirit of the day.
Ultimately, the feast day successfully united the school community in a joyful expression of faith. The assembly and celebratory event truly honoured Saint Dominic’s legacy, and served as a powerful reminder to be proactive in the pursuit of knowledge and compassion.
