On Thursday, September 12th, our school community gathered to celebrate Holy Eucharist, marking the beginning of the academic year, 2024-2025. This Mass highlighted the concept of original sin while focusing on the strength we find through our faith. Held in the school hall, the celebration was led by the newly appointed priest, Father Maurice White, whose engaging and relatable homily made a lasting impact. The mass was a moment for everyone to pause, and connect with our values and each other.
Father addressed the theme of original sin by discussing how easily we can be deceived and manipulated. To make this concept more relatable, he used the popular movie Mean Girls as a reference. By drawing parallels between the manipulative behavior depicted in the film and the subtle ways we can be misled in our own lives, he helped students understand the importance of discernment and integrity in a way that was both engaging and comprehensible.
In his homily, Fr. Maurice also addressed a Bible verse that many find difficult to accept and live by: “If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn the other cheek also” (Matthew 5:39). He explained that this verse calls for forgiveness and understanding, even in the face of adversity or injustice. Father emphasized that this teaching encourages us to respond to negativity with grace and to maintain our integrity, rather than resorting to retaliation.
The choir, along with the whole school’s participation, in the liturgy, which they had rehearsed with dedication throughout the week, beautifully complemented Fr. Maurice’s homily. The songs of praise added an uplifting and spirited element to the Mass, enhancing the overall experience and reinforcing the messages of personal strength and clarity.
The mass concluded with a joyful song that had everyone singing along, reinforcing the spirit of togetherness. As we left the hall, it was clear that the experience had touched many, sparking conversations and reflections that extended beyond the school walls, students still singing the songs from the mass.
This mass was more than just a religious service; it was a celebration of our collective journey and a reminder of the power of unity. Father’s message, emphasizing that true strength lies in letting go of grudges and showing compassion, even when it’s difficult left us all with a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to strengthening our community bonds.
